Origin of the Hamilton Twp. Independence Day Parade & Celebration

It all began in 2001 when three friends, Pat Cremeans, Sue Tomlinson and Linda Scott came up with the idea that there should be some sort of  July 4  celebration in Hamilton Township that the whole community could enjoy. They formed a committee of three and met regularly. Once word of a parade and celebration in the park began to get out and embraced by the community--the trio became known as Three Women and a Parade.

Our local VFW Post 9035 consented to be the parade grand marshal that first year. Members of the post also judged the celebration's first contest.

In order to garner community participation for the parade, the celebration's first contest was born. Known as the "Spirit of '76" contest, participants were asked to create floats that best exhibited the "Spirit of '76." The three-women committee secured an Ohio State flag that had once been flown over the State House and an American flag that had once been flown over Washington, D.C.

VFW members judged that first contest and the flags were presented by a local State representative and a local U.S. representative to the winners of best decorated bicycle, children’s contest, and best decorated float, adult contest.

The celebration was truly a community affair and it grew even larger the next year. The event became a township government controlled function in its third year.

In 2007 building on this highly successful annual parade Hamilton Township Fire Rescue, in cooperation with the Hamilton Township Park Board, turned this event into a summer celebration with rides, games, food, fireworks, but most of all fun!

In 2008 we look to continue to grow the event with the addition of a Little Mr. and Miss Firecracker contest, a pie baking contest, and the Hamilton Township Idol Competition. The event will be held June 27th, 28th and 29th at Testerman Park located at 8373 Maineville Rd. Hamilton Township, Ohio
